Getting a large quantity of links from high-authority sites is very difficult, but not impossible. In the SEO world we are always reading about viral pieces of content that gather hundreds of links.

Doing keyword research can help you find keywords with lower difficulty that are easy to rank with and so improve your organic traffic.
